Tigist Mekonnen
Tigist is an internist and currently doing her cardiology fellowship. She works as an assistant professor at Addis Ababa University, department of Internal Medicine. As a fellow in cardiology, she uses echocardiography on a daily basis.
Impact Project
Tigist’s project outlines a comprehensive Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) training program focused on cardio-POCUS, to be conducted at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital in Ethiopia. Led by Tigist and four cardiology fellows, the program targets internal medicine residents, with approximately 100 participants rotating every three months. Each cycle includes five lectures on ultrasound basics and cardio-POCUS, followed by daily skills stations featuring practical demonstrations, live video examples of emergent cases, and hands-on practice with patients. The training will take place in the hospital’s Echocardiography Lab and potentially the Cardiac Critical Care Unit. This initiative aims to enhance the POCUS skills of internal medicine residents, potentially improving cardiac care capabilities at the hospital.
