Shezi Hlelisani Mirriam
Shezi has been a medical imaging technologist for over fifteen years, working for the Eswatini Government. She currently works at the Nhlangano Health Centre while pursuing a Masters in Diagnostic Ultrasound at Ernest Cook Ultrasound and Research Institute in Uganda. Her goal is to have a national policy around tiered diagnostic imaging that will support primary care and specialty services for the overall improved health of the population of Eswatini.
Impact Project
Shezi’s project aims to improve access to and utilization of Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) in Eswatini’s public health facilities, with a focus on enhancing maternal health care. Initially, a survey will assess the accessibility of obstetric ultrasound services among pregnant women. Based on these findings, radiographers in emergency departments will be trained in basic obstetrics and gynecological POCUS skills. The project will target 12 public health facilities, including 6 health centers and 6 hospitals. Training will cover various aspects of obstetric ultrasound, from basic principles to specific conditions like ectopic pregnancy. The project’s success will be measured by tracking outcomes such as the percentage of pregnant women receiving ultrasound scans before 24 weeks, the proportion of trained radiographers performing obstetric and gynecological studies, reduced travel distances for ultrasound services, and improved referral systems in sexual and reproductive health.
