Sanjeewa Skad
Sanjeewa is an emergency medicine (EM) physician in his second year of international rotation in Queensland, Australia. Sanjeewa is skilled in ultrasound-guided procedures such as nerve blocks, emergency intervention, and emergency resuscitation. He also spent time teaching point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) in low-resource healthcare areas. Sanjeewa’s ambitions include developing a minimum image set concept in EM POCUS, introducing an internationally recognized EM POCUS program for Sri Lankan emergency medicine and critical care trainees, and developing a POCUS curriculum for training in low-resource healthcare areas.
Impact Project
Sanjeewa’s project focuses on Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) training program for emergency medicine trainees in Sri Lanka, developed by the Sri Lanka College of Emergency Physicians. The program adresses the lack of proper ultrasound skills assessment and curriculum in the country’s emerging emergency medicine system. It consists of two stages: a basic physics module followed by a four-day skill course covering eight core emergency ultrasound modules, and a subsequent phase involving log book assessment and an exit examination. The curriculum focuses on essential areas such as cardiac, FAST, AAA, hepatic/biliary, early pregnancy, lung, procedures, and fluid management ultrasound. The project targets 160-200 emergency medicine trainees annually, with plans to expand to all A&E doctors in Sri Lanka. The program aims to empower participants to gain international accreditation, improve patient care in resource-limited settings, and ultimately provide POCUS knowledge to all healthcare providers in Sri Lanka.
