Mark Edmon Tan

Philippines

Mark is a Rehabilitation Medicine Specialist in the Philippines and the first Filipino to receive the Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) Musculoskeletal (MSK) Specialty certification. He has over 6 years of experience in the field of musculoskeletal ultrasound procedures including platelet-rich plasma (PRP). His main objective is to improve the accuracy of musculoskeletal injury diagnosis and to determine the best treatment with ultrasound use.

Impact Project

Mark’s project aims to introduce Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) into the sidelines of the FIBA World Cup, focusing on games involving Team USA and Gilas Pilipinas (the Philippine National Team). The initiative stems from the observation that immediate soft tissue imaging could enhance decision-making about players’ return to play after injuries, even when X-rays are negative. Led by Mark and a team of doctors with RMSK certifications or local musculoskeletal ultrasound training, the project aims to cover games at SM Mall of Asia Arena and Philippine Arena. The primary target audience is viewers who are potential patients, with the goal of generating interest in POCUS services. The secondary target is doctors from other fields who could incorporate POCUS into their practice. The project seeks to make POCUS visible in TV coverage and social media, potentially revolutionizing sideline medical care in major sporting events.
