Deepa Shivnani
Deepa is an Otolaryngologist who has completed her fellowship in Pediatric Otolaryngology with advanced training in Pediatric Airway. She is a highly motivated surgeon with over five years of experience in a tertiary care hospital in India. During her practice, Deepa realized the need for a non-invasive screening technique for the timely evaluation of pediatric airway disorders in the emergency department. Deepa’s objective is to improve the quick diagnosis and treatment plan in critically compromised airways and provide a cost-effective and non-invasive alternative diagnostic solution for pediatric patients.
Impact Project
Deepa’s project aims to establish and validate ultrasound as a screening tool for pediatric upper airway evaluation while providing comprehensive training to healthcare professionals. The project is structured in two phases: Phase 1 focuses on validating POCUS by comparing ultrasound diagnoses with endoscopic evaluations in children presenting with noisy breathing or stridor at Manipal Hospital, Bangalore, India.
Phase 2 is dedicated to training various healthcare professionals, including pediatricians, emergency specialists, family physicians, and residents, covering topics from ultrasound physics to advanced airway assessment techniques.
The training will initially be conducted at Manipal Hospital, with plans to expand to other designated hospitals in India. This comprehensive approach aims to improve pediatric airway assessment capabilities and expand the use of POCUS in pediatric care across various healthcare settings in India, potentially revolutionizing the approach to pediatric airway evaluation and management.
