Ammar Ahmed
Ammar is currently a medical trainee based in London, UK. He is a dedicated educator and is undertaking a master’s in medical education. Ammar’s goal is to help incorporate formal point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) training as part of the national training program for junior doctors in the UK. He believes that making POCUS training more accessible to junior doctors from an early stage in their careers will help them better utilize this skill and ultimately improve patient care.
Impact Project
Ammar’s project is aimed at foundation-year doctors in the UK. The project’s goal is to enable newly qualified doctors to gain an understanding of the basic principles of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS). Furthermore, these doctors will be taught basic POCUS skills tailored to their level of training and will be given guidance on how to further master the use of POCUS as they enter specialty training and beyond. Since this project proposal is aimed at a national level, it will require approval and a close partnership with the UK foundation program team. As part of the project, there will be regular training days which will include POCUS skills workshops.
These workshops will teach junior doctors’ basic skills such as peripheral IV access using ultrasound, IVC assessment, and AAA scans. The project also aims to include career events where trainees will be able to network with consultants and senior doctors who have expertise in POCUS. These experienced professionals will be able to guide and mentor the junior doctors in their POCUS journey.
